What is a laser?
The acronym “laser” stands for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation”. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) or cold laser, has been increasingly utilized in the clinical setting over the past decade. It is a painless, sterile, non-invasive, drug-free modality that is used for acute and chronic pain, traumatic injuries, post concussive syndrome and many other near-musculoskeletal conditions.
How does the laser promote healing?
The goal of the laser treatment is to deliver light energy units, in the form of photons, to injured tissues needing repair. LLLT uses various wavelengths and frequencies of light that penetrate into the body the cellular level. There are photo-receptors within the cell that are activated by the lasers which promote energy production. This increase in cellular energy stimulates biochemical reactions, protein and growth factor synthesis, cell growth and proliferation and enhanced blood and oxygen flow. This cascade of events enhances the healing process providing pain reduction, reduced muscle spasm and decreased inflammation.
When is laser therapy available?
We are offering this therapy in addition to your regular chiropractic care, and because it is not a covered service by any insurance company, there is an out-of-pocket charge for this treatment. The fee is based the protocol needed, which will be determined by your treating doctor.
The laser therapy can be utilized along with chiropractic, acupuncture and massage, but it can also be a stand-alone treatment. It only takes 5-6 minutes per protocol, and frequently requires a series of sessions.
